According to former Raider Jim Otto in his autobiography Jim Otto: The Pain of Glory:
"Controversy does remain, though, about who designed the logo. A former art teacher at McClymonds High School in Oakland contends he was given the project by the Raiders as a classroom assignment, and that one of his students designed the pirate logo. There's another logo claimant in Hawaii who maintains he drew the pirate, and that he modeled it after the actor Randolph Scott."
